Puno

Oct 30 - Nov 1, 2008
Puno, Titicaca lake, Amentani

We came to Puno and are now wandering in the middle of Andean Mountains.
The landscape here is amazing and it´s worth spending some extra time just for that.
Besides, the people here are very friendly and remind me of the Zapotec Indians in the valley of Teotetlan in Mexico.

The native Indians in Peru, Quechua, who are spread in the sacred valley of Cusco, in many cultural aspects, such as food, are very similar to those in Mexico.
If anyone come to Peru, even though the people are friendly, please be alert of the ¨voluntary tour guide.¨ Some of them don´t make clear that they want to give you a tour and just take you to sightseeings. As in any other place in Latin America, this kind of situation is common, but in Peru, it seems to be worth. I had a very hard time to ditch a ¨tour guide¨ since he was very nice.

The sacred valley of Cusco is very nice and is not such a large area. Since we only had a limitted time, we hired a cab and paid for the hour. It only cost us 20 Soles ($6 to $7) per hour and took us 3 hours to see everything. Urubamba and Pisac were especially nice.

After that, we took a bus to Puno from Cusco and took a local long distance bus, which was much cheaper than the tourist buses and quite comfortable. The name of the bus company is called POWER. Amantani Island in the Titicaca Lake was very quiet and nice. If you happen to visit the island, the locals offers a room and 3 meals for the fixed price in their own houses: 25 Soles, but have to remember that the life of islander is far, far from our modern life, REALLY.

I am coming down with the cold and the altitude here is higher than Cusco.
Yasu wants to go to Bolivia tomorrow, but I am not sure if I will able to riding on the bus for many hours.

Maya, you and Yassu should have some Coca tea, also called mate de coca for the altitude sickness. I heard they have it there and it helps with that and get lots of sleep and eat well so you can get better. ;)

MC & Yasu, I was impressed by your wonderful trip story with specific explanation.

I'd like to visit there, if I have any chance later.

Thanks for your good article.
